Blade Terminology
  • (1) Blade BackThe body of the blade that does not contain the teeth.
  • (2) Blade ThicknessThe dimension of the blade from side to side.
  • (3) Blade WidthThe nominal dimension of the band saw blade when measuring from the tip of the tooth to the back of the band.
  • CamberThe arcing/bending of the cutting edge or back of the band saw blade.
  • Cutting RateThe speed at which the cross sectional area of the material is cut (square inches per minute).
  • Feed RateThe speed of the material pushed into the blade (inches per minute).
  • (8) GulletThe curved area at the base of the tooth.
  • Gullet DepthThe distance from the tooth tip to the bottom of the gullet.
  • (5) KerfThe amount of the material removed by the blade cut.
  • StrippageOccurs when the teeth are pulled or break out of a saw blade.
  • (9) Tooth FaceThe surface of the tooth from where the chip is formed.
  • (6) Tooth PitchThe distance from the tip of one tooth to the tip of the next tooth.
  • (10) Tooth Rake AngleThe angle of the tooth face formed by a line perpendicular to the cutting direction of the saw.
  • (4) Tooth SetThe bending of the teeth to the right or left to allow clearance of the back of the blade through the cut.
  • (7) TPIThe number of teeth per inch as measured from gullet to gullet
